podcastED: SUFS president Doug Tuthill interviews Florida state Rep. Randy Fine on education choice expansion in Florida

On this episode, Tuthill talks with the chair of the House PreK-12 Appropriations Committee about HB 7045, the landmark education choice bill Fine sponsored this past legislative session.

With the bill’s passage, nearly a million students in the Sunshine State are now eligible for some type of education choice scholarship. Fine and Tuthill discuss how Florida got to this point, why this issue is personal for Fine, and the role the Florida House has played over the past 20 years in leading the charge for expanding education choice.

“What we’re doing in Florida is returning to the notion of public education – the education of the public. We should not care how a child gets educated … as long as the child is educated. And every kid is different. Every vehicle is different. Our goal should be the education of the public, not the system by which the public is educated.”

EPISODE DETAILS:

  • How Fine’s experience as a bullied student has fueled his commitment to education choice
  • Legislative opportunities to further increase scholarship amounts and expand education savings accounts
  • Hope for greater bipartisan support for expanding choice
  • Fine’s advice for lawmakers in state houses across the country interested in following Florida’s lead
