Technology. Board of Education members worry the state isn’t move fast enough, or spending enough, to get the technological improvement necessary for Common Core. StateImpact Florida.

STEM. Florida needs to do more to make sure more students take the calculus, chemistry and physics courses they need to successfully pursue careers in engineering and the physical sciences, writes FSU physics professor Paul Cottle in this op-ed for the Tallahassee Democrat.

School security. Students and staff at a Pasco elementary school are spooked by frequent gunshots in nearby woods, reports the Tampa Bay Times. Forty Collier County sheriff’s deputies graduate from a program designed to prepare them to work in schools, reports the Naples Daily News.

School calendar. District schools could start the year a few days earlier under a bill filed by Sen. Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland. Lakeland Ledger.
