redefinED executive editor talks school choice with education advocate Chris Stewart

BASIS Flagstaff Charter School, which opened in 2011, consistently makes the list of Arizona’s top charter schools.

On the heels of this morning’s post – a Matt Ladner commentary that published on newsweek.com – we have for our readers this afternoon another Matt Ladner appearance: an interview Ladner recorded with lifelong activist and Brightbeam CEO Chris Stewart, aka “Citizen Stewart,” for Stewart’s morning #UnPublic show.

Stewart refers to Ladner as one of the smartest people he knows when it comes to arguing about school choice policy. The two discuss during the interview how Ladner’s home state of Arizona has dived into the education choice movement and what data from the Educational Opportunity Project at Stanford University reveals about student outcomes in the state.

Among Stewart’s questions for Ladner:

“What’s behind the success of Arizona schools? Beyond school choice, is there a particular educational philosophy or set of practices that boosts achievement? Has Arizona had some top-down education reform that got all their district leaders, schools, and teachers on the same page?

Ladner’s well-reasoned responses may surprise you.
